America’s Sweetheart?

Have you all been following this Ann Coulter thing? I’m glad that news outlets are finally willing to take their balls out of their pocket and dump her on her ass. There is no place in the political world for the kind of hatred she espouses. This latest display with John Edwards is just the latest in a long line of verbal diarrhea. I thought that maybe Fox News would pull her off the air, but night after night I see she’s still there spewing crap. Even though it is well-known that Fox is a mouthpiece for the right-wing agenda, you have to wonder why they don’t see that she is hurting their cause. Sure, the Christian right is always going to vote for the party that supports a ban on gay marriage and overturning Roe v. Wade, but what about all the moderates? Coulter’s musings have got to turn them off. I would have thought after the ass-whooping the Repubs took in the mid-terms, and Bush’s continually plummeting approval rating that they would be trying to tread water with the moderates. The question is, how many more newspapers need to pull her column and denounce this kind venom before Fox pulls a “me too” and drops her?

Ive only started recently listening to your show, and i enjoy your opinions very much. That said I find some of your positions contradictory. In example, last week you wrote on your site (and mentioned on your show) that you wish you could say what you wanted but were to much of a coward. On the other hand you bash Ann Coulter for saying exactly what she wanted and having the balls that, at least genitically speaking, you should have. In any case, i dont really care what political agenda she currently is pushing, however i have to put myself againts any person whoe argues that she spews “verbal diarrhea.” My point is that moderates use the same language. I call people “fagot” and I call people “pussy’s.” In fact, im pretty sure that most people do – most moderate people. It has nothing to do with racism, sexism, or whatever politically correct thing that the media feel I need to go along with. Alot of moderates dont get to see what goes on tv or the newpaper, so we dont know what most politicians are about. I do know this – i will vote hands down for a person who talks my language…. even if i disagree with almost everything that person stands for.

  2. I think you need to re-listen to my show before you say I am contradictory. Not being able to speak my mind about job or family issues is far different from speaking one’s mind responsibly on social and political issues.

Second, I couldn’t disagree with you more about “most people” using the word faggot. Most people, at least not people that I associate with, use that term in everyday conversation. It is an offensive term and I would use it no more than I would use the “N” word in my vocabulary.

As for you voting for a person that speaks your language but stands for nothing you believe in, well, I simply find that idiotic. I can’t tell you ho to use your vote though.

I think that Ann Coulter is an obnoxious, utlra-conservative authoritarian. Where she does have the right to free speech (like any other American)and in line with that, voice her criticisms of others, she lacks class and abuses her 1st amendment rights. Crticizing someone’s opinions and views because they are not in line with yours, while common, makes you common. That’s all she looks like to me – someone that feels the need to scream and shout, “Look at me! Look at me!”

I love your show, I think it’s well researched and insightful. Even though I am conservative by nature (no that doesn’t make me a Bush supporter) I find the opinions you express to be very intriguing and intelligent.

On the other hand it bothers me when you and the rest of the general public gets outraged over a minor thing such as Anne Coulter calling Edwards a “faggot.” In cases like this just let her speak, let her say whatever she wants. All she’s going to do is turn off the majority of the people who hear her. Whatever happened to free speech? To paraphrase a line from the movie the American President, “Living in a country with free speech means you have to defend everyone’s right to free speech even if what that person says strikes at the very heart of who you are and turns your stomach.” (Remember that’s not a direct quote).

At what point do we say someone is abusing their 1st Amendment rights? There should be no limits when it comes to speaking one’s opinions.

I love the fact that you have a forum and are expressing your rights and opinions by writing what you have about her and producing your show. In the end I agree that her comment was used in poor taste as I have gay friends and would never use that term in the fashion she has. But like I said she has to have the right to say what she wants, because how long until you cannot say what you want?

    Mike,
I must pose the following question to you, also from the movie The American President:

How do you have patience for people who claim they love America, but clearly can’t stand Americans?

  6. Kelly,

That is my FAVORITE quote from that movie. In fact, I’ve used it on this show before. Way to use it well!

    Kelly,
Good question, and that is a good line from the movie. All I am saying is just don’t condemn someone because their opinion disagrees with yours, in fact I disagree with her opinion. But to say that the networks should start pulling her or should show some discretion in allowing her to speak her mind takes us into dangerous territory (making reference to this week’s show). What’s worse, people not being able to express their opinions out of fears of persecution or every now and then someone gets a little offended. Personally I am for a free flow of ideas and opinions even if it rubs a few people the wrong way. Give her enough rope and she’ll hang herself…
