American Cliche #118
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
I recorded this episode this morning (Monday) in the studio in Santa Barbara, somewhere around 9:00 AM. As I type this I am about 35,000 feet somewhere over Montana as I head towards New York. By the time it actually gets posted and you hear this it will be Tuesday. I’m heading to the SMX Conference, so I’ll be out of the loop until Friday. Talk to you then.

I don’t know anyone with bad teeth! Or teeth as bad as Austin Powers anyway! I’ve had 6 teeth removed, all of them by professionals, all with plenty of pain relief. Having said that I’m lucky as my university has its own dental practice/doctors surgery, so for the past few years I have easy access to a denist whenever I need one.
And yeah its not the cheapest thing, but nor is it the most expensive. My last check up cost me £28, I had to have an x-ray to check my wisdom teeth, which considering you’re only supposed to go a couple of times a year really isn’t so bad.

You are so right about the people that the armed forces are recuiting to fight the war in Iraq. You make my point that we should bring back the draft.

Dorian,
Bring back the draft? No fucking way. Wow, that is certainly not the point I was trying to rive home in that segment.
Are you of draft age in the U.S.? Do you have kids that would eligible for the draft?

scott,
Bring back the draft would only accomplish two things. Volunteer enlistment would drop and College enlistment would increase. (Or the population of mexico would increases for once. HEHE, Would be good for the immigration issue. HAHA) There are many people that I know that would point a pencil at someone than a gun. I do get your point on the segment and I do agree that the military needs a better recruitment tactic. (maybe bring our troops home.) Just a thought…

I lived in England for over ten years and it is, indeed, a nightmare to find an NHS dentist. Most dentists in the UK have discovered that it is far more profitable to pursue private practise and, for that reason, I challenge anyone over there to find a dentist who accepts new NHS paitents.
While the teeth of the British are the butt of many jokes (e.g. Austin powers and ‘The big book of British smiles’ in the Simpsons) of course they aren’t generally going to be as bad as an obvious spoof might depict. That being said, there is a cultural difference between oral care in the US and the UK. The biggest culprit for this is that, in the US, practically everyone has had braces. In the UK, braces tend to be reserved for the very well off or the very severely bad teeth. The removal of wisdom teeth is also less common (probably because we Americans have already invested so much in straight teeth)
As for the draft, you cannot defer the way you once could. If you are a college student when your number comes up, you can only defer until the end of the current semester. The rules have changed since vietnam.

My wife and I recently got a fortune that read:
“Come back later, I’m sleeping (yes, even cookies need their sleep)”
