Keith Olbermann Talks About Prop 8

I have been relatively quiet since last week’s show. The time off has been nice honestly. Here in California, my friends and family are still pretty upset about Prop 8 – the controversial measure that took aware the rights of same sex couples to marry. How can we have taken such a step forward with the election of Barack Obama, but a step back with the passing on this Proposition?

I think Keith Olbermann of MSNBC said it better than I ever could. Your comments are welcome and appreciated.

  1. I’m on your side with this one Scott. good find. Funny though in part of the clip he brings up the point that back in the day blacks couldn’t marry whites, that was fixed but they also shows on MSNBC that the majority of minorities voted for prop 8….kinda hypocritical. thoughts?

It’s sad that when Obama coming in is such a huge step forward this is such a large step back in another area.

I don’t really know much about American politics, can any changes be brought about now even tho this vote has been and gone?

  3. Chad – yes, would appear very hypocritical. It’s easy to forget where you come from and we don’t often enough put ourselves in someone else’s shoes.

Rachael – I was just talking to Kim about what we can do to actually change it. There are protests and boycotts going on here, but not sure what we need to do to revisit the actual legislation.

Scott, were there any clips of educated, rational people defending the legislation? I’d be curious to the reasoning behind someone who was in favor of it that wasn’t just spouting bigotry.

  5. Jim – Funny you should say that. I’ve been looking for some sort of thoughtful analysis of why someone would support this and NOT have it be rooted in bigotry and I can’t find one. People try and make their argument, but at the end of the day, it all boils down to “I don’t like gays, not do I believe they should have the same rights I do.” Then, there is some bullshit about the bible and blah blah blah. At the end of the day it’s a denial of basic civil rights. Period.

  6. The irony of all this? Of all places, Connecticut makes same-sex marriage legal, while California bans it…

As for my opinion? They are people. Let them live like people. Let them obey the same laws and restrictions of people. Let them love like people. And let them marry, like people.

The “sanctity” of marriage? Right, because last I checked it’s not the 1920s.

    Hi Scott,

I find interesting that they say this is to protect marriage. But how many of the supporters would have voted for this if they had made Divorce illegal as well? To me that would truly be protecting marriage and prevent those not serious about what marriage means from making a half ass commitment.
