American Cliche #178

I think Kim and I are the only ones on the planet that didn’t watch (or care about) the Academy Awards this year. Because of Emma we don’t ever get a chance to go to a movie so we hadn’t seen any of the nominated movies. In the past two years while working as the producer of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival Podcast, I saw all the movies and interviewed most of the nominees on the red carpet. This year I just wasn’t that interested.

I am, however, very interested in GoToMyPC. If you’re in the market for a remote access solution for your PC try GoToMyPC: Try it FREE for 30 days! For this special offer, visit www.gotomypc.com/podcast

  1. Hey Scott! I am still listening to the show for this week, but I just wanted to comment on your thoughts about the Oscars. I did not watch the Oscars, nor do I ever watch them. Instead I was at work, I am a college student/crew member at my local Trader Joe’s and the day of the Oscars we were packed and almost everybody that I talked to were getting supplies for an Oscar party or just to watch it with their families. I bring this up because you were saying how you did not want to watch the Oscars because you did not want to see [over payed] Hollywood actors pat each other on the back, but I think that a lot of people want to do this because it is a way for them to feel like everything is normal and it is a way for them to escape from the news stories and reality of the recession we are currently in. I have no idea if my jumble of thoughts makes any sense, but I just wanted to throw that out there. Thanks for putting out such a quality show!

The hair wardrobe is quite a concept. Though strange,… good for her. In this economy we should all be open to ideas like hers! I do believe our economy will improve, quicker than my hair could grow long enough to make a coat out of, so yeah……… Good for her though!! LOL

I think the “eye for an eye” acid case is very intriguing. I believe the guy deserves to be blinded too. (I think if someone did something to you or your family you may start to feel differently about the death sentence & about the “eye for an eye” concept.) I love your peaceful reasoning about not answering hatred with more hatred…. but sometimes people just deserve what they have coming to them. Do you think tax dollars for years of counseling is better than tax dollars spent to kill off someone who has killed/raped and destroyed the lives of the victim’s families? Tax dollars to house, clothe, and keep and feed that maniac for 80 or 90 years vs. “Goodbye Asshole, good luck on the other side”. It is very barbaric to think about, very disturbing.

Great show, Scott. p.s. You are not the only ones who didn’t give a rats ass about the Academy Awards and the flaunting of $$ amongst the wealthy. GAG! I think hollywood stars –and professional athlete’s– should all take a salary cut and that would help our financial crisis!

  3. I agree with both of your rationales here on the Oscars. There are two schools of thought: 1. The Oscars make us feel normal and make us still feel like a country at the top of our game. 2. People that can’t afford groceries are sick of hearing how much Kate Winslet’s dress cost. I understand both sides.

As for the “eye for an eye” and death penalty issue – Laurie – you said:

“I think if someone did something to you or your family you may start to feel differently about the death sentence & about the “eye for an eye” concept.”

That would seem to imply that you have had someone in you family that was a victim of violent crime, yes? On the other side of the coin, what if it was your son or husband that was on death row. Would you be so quick to jump up and down to support the death penalty?

Obviously, if anyone ever hurt my daughter or my wife, I may very well see things a different way, but I like to believe that I am a better human than “eye for an eye.” I hope I never have to find out.

Hey Scott! I know you like hearing people’s comments about the weekly stories, and when I heard about the ‘human hair wardrobe’ and your reaction, I needed to say something.

You mentioned how the hair may look.. if it looked like ‘human hair’ but I believe it was mentioned she weaved it, so it would look like any other fabric, like a thin wool, maybe. (We share the hair off sheep and make them into clothes, remember!) At least she used her own hair as opposed to a complete strangers?

Another thing I have to mention is that this this isn’t quite as strange as you seem to think it is. Granted, we don’t wear human hair hats, but it’s extremely common for use to weave human hair into our own in the form of extensions and wigs.

Now this brings me to a story I actually came to just a couple days ago, you may be interested in it:

Essentially, Hindus go to temple to donate their hair religiously, it is promptly swept, cleansed, dyed, sold and shipped off (a majority to North America) without their knowledge. Granted, this is a case of ‘what they don’t know doesn’t hurt them’ but something about this doesn’t sit, it seems to cheapen a very sacred, humbling ritual of the Hindu faith, simply for the likes of celebreties and the like to have ‘natural hair untouched by harsh chemicals’. The only good thing I see from this is that the temple is getting a share of the profits, but is it right for a temple to make money in the first place?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this!

Hi there, Martin from Gothenburg, Sweden here. Thank You for a great show!

Hey, where have you been? There’s a dog groomer who makes handbags out of the fur she trims from her canine clients and sells them to the owners. The purses are actually kind of cute!

    Hi Scott,

Great show! I really enjoyed it this week. It was very thought provoking. A few things, you kept saying Academy Awards. I’m sure you know by now that it was the Oscars, but I just wanted to point it out to you. (Like and FYI, not a “LOOK AT WHAT YOU DID WRONG” thing ;) ) Next, the eye for an eye thing. It reminds me of a quote from Ghandi: “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.” I’m not really sure WHAT I think of this predicament. Who are we do take the life of someone else? But then, would it be okay if the victim was allowed to do it the attacker? Maybe it should be up to that person. I don’t know, I just wanted to comment and let you know I appreciate your efforts in making a show every week. Thank you!

  9. Actually Joyce – it is actually called the Academy Awards. The “Oscar” is the statue that is given out. Look it up. :)

Oh sorry, my mistake. That is confusing, but I guess I shouldn’t have questioned you considering you are in the industry. I always thought the Emmys was short for Academy Awards. Ignorance isn’t always bliss. :P
