I have accounts with both, I do use Facebook more often. I’m not a total internet geek, but my opinion is Facebook is used more for socializing with friends, and Twitter is used more for news, business & comments to the media….

  2. I think that’s a great point Linda. I think most people do use Facebook more for personal stuff and Twitter has a little les structure around it.

I currently work for a nonprofit organization. I have almost no advertising budget for the four programs that I facilitate. I have resorted to using Facebook, Twitter and other Social Media avenues as well as building partnerships with local businesses and meeting people face to face, in order to drive them to both our twitter account and our fan page. If I had to choose between facebook and twitter for marketing, I would use twitter, because of exactly what Linda said. I think twitter is unique in the fact that you are only aloud to use 140 characters. What you say has to be very quick, catchy and to the point. This can be very affective because it sticks in the minds of those who are following you!

As far as ads go, I think financially speaking, this is a smart move on the part of Twitter. They are monopolizing on what they can do to make money. It has to come from somewhere. And for nonprofits like the one that I work for, the free use of Twitter, is something I would like to continue to do. So I say, if businesses wnat to have ads on Twitter, go for it!

  4. Margaretann,

I think the fact that you feel like you have “resorted” to using social media because you have no budget is the wrong way to look at it. :)

Social media is a hugely powerful medium. I think that it’s one of the single most effective things a company can do to drive sales and branding results with little or no money. I think that based on the last part of your response, you get that though…

It will be interesting to see how the new ad platform works for Twitter and how their 106 million users repond to it.
