Prepping this show was an unexpected experience for me. Someone I respect had given me the idea to make this episode a soundtrack journey of my life over the last five and a half years. I knew immediately it was the right approach. As I started to go back through old shows notes and blog posts, I realized how much how much has changed in my life and in our world. Not only has every major part of my existence been flipped – birth of Emma, fallout of my marriage, career hurdles and the passing of Mia the Wonderdog – but the world has changed drastically too. Since AC began we’ve been witness to Hurricane Katrina, the election of the first black president and the worst recession in decades.
This episode will not appeal to some of you. There aren’t any stories this week about stupid people or the state of politics in the U.S. a week after the election. Instead, call it a diary entry – a summary of the last half decade of my life and the way I’ve viewed the world around me.
Boring? Maybe. Self-serving? Absolutely. But I can say it’s honest and it’s unfiltered. I hope you enjoy it, but if not, come back next week and I’ll be back to my usual form. Promise.

Loved the show
Some cracking music on there, and really made me think about how my life has changed over the time I’ve been listing to your show too. There’s way too much to write as a comment, but thanks for taking me down your memory lane and sending me on one of my own

Thanks for the comment Rachael.
Crazy to think about how much has changed in all of our lives over the last 5 and a half year, right?
I hope things are well with you.

I really enjoyed your 250th show Scott. I agree with Rachael that it made me reflect on my own last 5 years. I’ve been listening since around Dec 2005 and I could pinpoint where I was at during different moments that you highlighted.
One situation I think I’ll always remember is your dealings with your voyeuristic neighbors at one of your residences. I could just picture you slowly closing the door.
Thanks again for sharing a part of your life with us.

I’m listening right now and I’m a bit in shock that Matt Nathanson’s “All We Are” was your ultrasound song.
That was the song I was listening to when my aunt asked me if I’d like to be godfather to her daughter.
I’ve been listening to the show since early 2006 (when we first got an iMac and I was playing with iTunes…), but it was interesting getting a summary of some of the things that’ve changed in all that time on your end.
Keep it up, Scott.

Man that was a fun sho. 250!
I watched your year unfold.
I am 52 with 2 daughters out of the house.
It is fun to hear that all the good times/bad times were not unique.
YOU BROUGHT ALL THOSE HEARTFELT MEMORIES!
Merci

Great 250th show! Sometimes it seems that 5 years in the grand scheme of things isn’t much. but when you look at just 5 years at a time, it’s amazing what goes on during that time. We usually forget more things than we remember until we stop and actually think about it.

Nick,
I’m glad that you were able to draw from the last five years of your life too. It makes it that much cooler when you’re able to go through your own journey.
Yes, the exhibitionist neighbors! That was crazy. I think they were having really loud sex one day while I was recording the show right?

Almond,
That’s a great song right? It’s interesting to hear how music affects different people and how the same song can have so many meanings.
Thanks for hanging out and listening all this time!

Brian,
Yeah five years can seem like a blink, but when you think about the last five years in our lives it’s been lots of crazy changes and stuff. Here’s to the next five!

Hey Scott…
I finally had the few minutes to listen to your 250th. I really hadn’t realized I’d been a listener for so long, but I seemed to remember all but your first couple of examples. It’s so great that through social media, I’ve been able to connect to the life, events, and opinions of somebody I most likely would never have met (although we still need to find a common conference for that beer).
As always, thanks so much for the great words and advice you’ve sent me and my students via AC . It’s been very helpful, and when I share an idea that has even a remotely jaded liberal slant, my current students will ask me if I got that from my ‘friend i’ve never met’.
Thanks again, Scott. Excellent show. Glad to be able to have shared in it.
