It’s been four months since I recorded an episode of American Cliche. I really did have every intention of coming back in April, but the ad agency I work with sort of screwed me and that put me in a difficult situation – how do I continue to do the show? The reality for me is that if I’m going to commit to creating something online on a regular basis it has to generate revenue for me. This show was barely meeting that criteria for a long time, but I pressed on – mainly because of my love for this community. I tried everything to make it work financially including trying the NPR listener-supported model. The bottom line is that even though I get emails and Facebook messages every single day telling me how much you all love the show and want it back, you (the collective you) haven’t been willing to make any sort of regular contributions to support the show. People speak volumes with their wallets and I’d say that was one of the biggest deciding factors of what I’m about to say.

I am officially canceling American Cliche. I know that’s not a surprise for any of you, but I thought it best to put some closure to a six year project. That said, I feel I owe you more than simply shutting the doors on a show that I worked so hard on for so many years. With that in mind, I am planning a final run of four shows to close it out. I’m tentatively eyeing June 22nd as the start date. Once they begin, they will be consecutive.

I’d like to try and include you guys as much as possible. That means I’d like for you to send me audio clips, emails and Facebook messages that express whatever you’d like to say or communicate about the show. I also want to try and get Brian and Jason back into the fold to contribute one final segment to the program. They were a big part of the show early on and it wouldn’t feel quite right to close things without them.

At this point I’m not doing these last four shows for monetary gain. I’m doing them because this brand and the community matters to me. But, if any of you would like to kick something into the tip jar to help the cause, I wouldn’t turn it down.

Thank you to everyone that still cares about AC after all these years. I’m going to try and send it out with a bang.

I wanted to give you all an update on the status of the show. It doesn’t look like we’re going to get the sponsorship we were hoping for this quarter. That means we’d be looking at an April 1st start date at the earliest before the show resumes production. Still, every single day on Facebook I get one or two people that message me or ask me via chat when the show is coming back. It seems that interest is still there, but people haven’t been too keen on donating up to this point.

So, I’ve had another thought… I know that many of you are small business owners, bloggers, podcasters, aspiring filmmakers, musicians, artists etc. What if you could sponsor American Cliche for as little as $50 per episode? There are several ways we could approach it, but the bottom line is that your spot would be heard by as many as 40,000 listeners!

This is our best and only shot at taking control of our advertising situation and getting the show back on the air. If you’re interested, send an email to: theamericancliche AT gmail DOT com and we’ll get started.

Finally today, I want to express my thanks to one amazing listener that made a sizable donation to the show. She’s asked to remain anonymous, but I still wanted to acknowledge her generosity.

Yes, I realize that it is an American holiday and that almost 40% of you listen from outside the U.S. That said, I invite you to share in the spirit. We all have things we are thankful for - even in difficult times. Over the next few days, try to focus on those positive things in your life. Cherish the time with your families and friends.

Thank you all for a being a part of my life - I'm certainly thankful for all of you.

I read about this incident the other day. It appears as though PBS edited Tina Fey’s acceptance speech for an award she’d received by removing only the political parts about Sarah Palin then claimed it had nothing to do with politics. Bullshit. I have no problem with any television network, especially one that’s public, wanting to stay out any appearance of political bias, but if that’s the case, just say so, don’t hide behind “time restrictions” as your excuse.

On another note of bad-assedness, is this a new theme or has Anderson Cooper always called out people and companies in such a succinct way? Nicely done.

Prepping this show was an unexpected experience for me. Someone I respect had given me the idea to make this episode a soundtrack journey of my life over the last five and a half years. I knew immediately it was the right approach. As I started to go back through old shows notes and blog posts, I realized how much how much has changed in my life and in our world. Not only has every major part of my existence been flipped – birth of Emma, fallout of my marriage, career hurdles and the passing of Mia the Wonderdog – but the world has changed drastically too. Since AC began we’ve been witness to Hurricane Katrina, the election of the first black president and the worst recession in decades.

This episode will not appeal to some of you. There aren’t any stories this week about stupid people or the state of politics in the U.S. a week after the election. Instead, call it a diary entry – a summary of the last half decade of my life and the way I’ve viewed the world around me.

Boring? Maybe. Self-serving? Absolutely. But I can say it’s honest and it’s unfiltered. I hope you enjoy it, but if not, come back next week and I’ll be back to my usual form. Promise.

I’m actually staying away from politics this week (mostly). I’ve said everything I can say to you. My hope is that you go to the polls with a clear head and vote for the candidate that actually has a plan for the change you want to see. Try and strip away all the fear-mongering and the attack ads and look at what the candidates stand for in your state. I have faith that this audience – this community – will make the right choices.

<itunes:summary>We're less than a week away from elections - I should be focusing 100% of my effort on that, right? Nope. I'm actually staying away from politics this week (mostly). I've said everything I can say to you. My hope is that you go to the polls with a clear head and vote for the candidate that actually has a plan for the change you want to see. Try and strip away all the fear-mongering and the attack ads and look at what the candidates stand for in your state. I have faith that this audience - this community - will make the right choices.

One of my favorite scenes from any movie is the last scene in “The American President.” It’s amazing because even though that movie was made 15 years ago, the message rings so true today. Take this quote from Michael Douglas (it’s at about the 2:23 mark in the video clip):

“We have serious problems to solve and we need serious people to solve them and whatever your particular problem is, I promise you, Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things and two things only – making you afraid of it and telling you who’s to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections.”

Now watch this latest ad from Ben Quayle:

Besides being for lower taxes and decreased spending, he doesn’t say a single thing that he’d actually do if elected. The ads spends two seconds on what he’s actually for and the other 29 seconds telling you who to be afraid of in this election. Are we really that short on leadership that we have to entertain electing the candidate that makes us fear something the most?

To be fair, I’ve seen Democratic nominees do this as well. How about dedicating air time to explaining how you’d solve problems instead of who’s to blame for them?

I thought it would be helpful to include the actual video of the soundclip I used in this week’s show. Anderson Cooper does a great job at summarizing the situation with Christine O’Donnell.
